What are WaveScan® and CustomVue™? WaveScan® is the trademarked term for wavefront analysis of an eye. Wavefront was developed for measurements in high-powered telescopes, but now it can be used to measure the unique imperfections in eyes. In fact, WaveScan® produces a sophisticated map that is 25 times more precise than standard measurements used for glasses and contact lenses. We call this map a WavePrint, because like your fingerprint, it is one of a kind.
CustomVue™ is the trademark term for wavefront-guided laser treatment, the most technologically advanced treatment available. For patients who are candidates for CustomVue™, we can use all of the detailed WaveScan® information, calculate the optimum individualized shape for a patient’s cornea, digitally transfer it to the laser, and accurately create the new shape on the patient’s eye while it is tracked by the laser system. Since the information is more detailed than a glasses or contact lens prescription, one would expect that it is theoretically possible to achieve better vision than with glasses or contact lenses. Indeed, FDA data showed that patients as a group had very good post-operative vision, at times better than with their best glasses correction. Also, they often had better night vision.
Everyone benefits from WaveScan® technology. CustomVue (R) is available to LASIK, Epi-LASIK and PRK patients, however not all patients are good candidates for CustomVue." For example, if it is impossible to get a repeatable mapping or a large enough standard laser vision correction is still the best option for these patients. Standard laser vision correction is still the best choice for these patients. In fact, we find little if any measurable difference in outcome between our CustomVue™ and Standard LASIK patients. |
