Patient Instructions after Epi-LASIK:
Medications until next visit
1. OmniPred 1% or Lotemax – one drop, four times per day. This is a steroid drop. You will use this for about 7-10 days, and then switch to a similar drop called Lotemax, which will be tapered over about 2-3 months. Always use exactly as prescribed.
2. Vigamox or Zymar – one drop, four times per day for one week. This is an antibiotic to help prevent infection.
3. Acular or Xibrom or Voltaren – one drop, four times per day for the first 3 days. If you are not having any discomfort, you may discontinue this drop or use it less frequently. This drop is only for discomfort and if used too often will delay healing.
After the procedure we will instill one set of the above drops and place a bandage contact lens on your eye. On the day of the procedure use the drops three more times. Wait one minute in between drops. The order you use the drops is not important.
4. Artificial tears (such as Refresh Plus) – use hourly or more as needed. Do not place them at the times of the other medicines. This drop will help with the foreign body sensation you may experience. If this drop is refrigerated, it will be more effective in soothing the eye.
5. Tylenol with codeine – (or other pain reliever) If you are having significant discomfort not relieved by extra strength Tylenol (acetaminophen) 2 tablets every 4 hours, then fill the prescription and use as prescribed.
6. Sleep Aid- We may prescribe Ambien to ensure good sleep over the next few days.
7. Vitamin C- 1000 mg. per day, or 500 mg. twice per day if your stomach is easily upset.
Other instructions
1. Your eye(s) may begin to become uncomfortable after the anesthetic drops wear off after the procedure. Use cold tears, ice compresses, Tylenol or Advil, and rest.
2. Do not allow any water in your eye until Dr.Mandava tells you that the surface has healed. Wash your face with a wash cloth taking great care not to get water or soap into your eyes.
3. Do not use eye make-up until the surface of your eye has healed.
4. Do not rub your eye. If the bandage contact lens falls out, discard it. Do not replace it or in any way try to reinsert it. Continue your drops as prescribed and call the doctor within 12 hours.
5. Wear a good quality pair of sunglasses (100% UV ray blocking) while outdoors in the post-operative period. This is a good habit for the rest of your life.
6. If you experience severe pain, a sudden decrease in vision, or increased discharge from the eye, call the doctor immediately. Do not hesitate to contact Dr. Mandava with any concerns or questions.
