Happy Anniversary!

In September, we celebrated 10 years of providing refractive surgery in Fairfield County. We started in September of 1998, just before LASIK was FDA approved. There were no lasers in the area at the time, so we travelled to a busy laser center in Manhattan. We consider people who had LASIK in those days the pioneers--they really took a leap of faith with a relatively new procedure to the area, not to mention a new doctor. It meant a lot to me that they put their trust in us back then. I spent a lot of time explaining the procedure, my training, and the research, and in doing so I spent a lot of time with these pioneers and made my first friends in the Greenwich area. I see many of them still today, and we chuckle about our big adventure into the city. It is interesting that before eye trackers, wavefront analysis, large optical zones, variable spot scanning, etc, that people still ended up with great vision that they enjoy today. Things have changed. We have better technology and are better at getting more people to 20/20. Safety has improved a bit in an already safe procedure. What hasn't changed is the way we treat our patients. Yes, we have been doing LASIK longer than anyone in the area, but we remember that every patient still feels like a pioneer even in 2008, and they still have to take that leap of faith. I am happy to spend the time to earn that trust, because besides the satisfaction of clearing vision, I truly enjoy the privilege of sharing a life-changing journey with each patient. -Dr. Mandava |
