Dr. Suresh Mandava is a board-certified, fellowship-trained refractive and cornea specialist with education from Cornell and Yale. He performs all types of corneal surgery and specializes in refractive surgery, including LASIK. What is Lasik?

LASIK is a safe and effective form of laser vision correction that has helped millions achieve clear vision. LASIK stands for "Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis" and involves reshaping the cornea using a precise laser to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure offers quick recovery and remarkable visual improvement, allowing patients to enjoy the freedom of clear vision.

What is PRK?

PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is an advanced laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors. Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a corneal flap, PRK gently removes the cornea's outermost layer before using a precise laser to reshape the underlying tissue. Although the recovery period may be slightly longer than LASIK, PRK offers excellent visual outcomes and is preferred for patients with thin corneas or certain corneal conditions.

iLasik VisxThe iLasik procedure is the most advanced and personalized laser vision correction treatment using wavefront-guided, iDesign Refractive Studio 2.0 technology. iLasik is an all laser vison correction procedure that has been the trusted choice for over 15 million treatments around the world. iLasik is a bladeless procedure that uses a proprietary technology to map your entire visual pathway and corrects vision using your 100% personalized eye map.

There are three steps to the iLasik procedure:

Step 1: The first step is to create a 3-D map of the imperfections of your eye using iDesign wavefront eye-mapping technology. This technology is 25X more precise than the previous wavescan, which measures and corrects errors that are not detected by conventional technology.

Step 2: The next step prepares the eye. This procedure uses an ultra-fast laser for creating a thin flap to prepare the cornea for treatment.

Step 3: The final step is when your personalized treatment is delivered by an ultra-precise laser. This laser is used to gently reshape the cornea to the desired curvature, based on the digital information from your personalized eye map.

Determining Your Candidacy for LASIK and PRK

If you're considering laser vision correction, the first step is to undergo a comprehensive refractive consultation. At our Stamford eye clinic, Dr. Mandava will assess your eye health, refractive error, corneal thickness, and other factors to determine if LASIK or PRK is suitable for you. During the consultation, he’ll discuss your visual goals, answer your questions, and provide personalized recommendations tailored to your needs.

We find that about 15% of patients we meet are not good candidates by our strict standards. Here are some conditions that may contraindicate laser vision correction:

  • Age below 18 years
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Certain eye conditions, such as glaucoma, cataracts, herpes virus eye
    infections, keratoconus, or severe dry eye
  • Unstable glasses prescription over the past year
  • Certain collagen vascular diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis,
    Sjögren’s syndrome, and lupus
  • Unrealistic expectations
